Mar 4, 2012 - Kedai Makeover - Phase 1

Definition of a :  guild

1.  an organization of persons with related interests, goals, etc., especially one formed for mutual aid or protection.
2.  any of various medieval associations, as of merchants or artisans, organized to maintain standards and to protect the interests of its members, and that sometimes constituted a local governing body.
Although this word 'guild' has been in use since medieval times, the founders of ACG chose to use this word when registering the birth of this group in 1979 to embody people of all walks and station in life but with same interests, ie. in the arts and to provide assistance and aid to any of its members when the need arises. To date, ACG has helped many members setup their own blogs.
Our first major project this year is to do a Kedai Makeover for one of our long-time member. Having lived & worked in this little shop for two decades, it really needed a clean-up & a change. Kak Yong, who rents this wooden shop from the city council, has been sewing the traditional kerawang (kebaya embroidery) for two decades, after being trained by the Kraftangan (Craft council) and honed her skills at Ang Eng, an established nyonya embroidery shop. She has also sewn for many fashion designers in KL. But sadly, due to influx of cheap, lesser quality, mass-produced kebaya embroidered clothes due to a sudden resurgence in the wearing of the old artform, her business dwindlled.

Now, she juggles her sewing assignments with community work for the Kementerian Wanita & Pembangunan, Persatuan Ibu Tunggal (Single mothers association) & Rukun Tetangga and is a committee member of ACG.
In the first phase, only three members could make it because many were involved in other events & bazaars. Many thanks to Adam & Fid.
